Giving thanks to Kyle Dubas
In the year of our lord two thousand and twenty we all need something to be thankful for. This year on thanksgiving there's one man every Toronto hockey fan should be thankful for and that man is Kyle Dubas.
After an abysmal end to the season with the Leafs getting bounced by the Blue Jackets some major changes were needed and we didn't waste any time. Before the draft and free agency started up we shit canned Kapanen, I was a Kasperi fan but we want changes we were gonna have to make some hard choices.
Following that up with handing out two one year extensions, one to the 23 year old Denis Malgin who we got from the Panthers last year and will hopefully get some more time in the show, the other was given out to Fan Favourite and hot tub enthusiast Jason Spezza. The boys seem to love Spezz, he's from Mississauga and we always love to see a hometown guy get to stick around.
I'm not going to go super in depth to all of our draft picks, but I'd thought I'd point out the fact that draft expert Ian Moran went on Spittin Chiclets and said that Amirov is going to be the steal of the draft and Akhtyamov could very well be our #1 netminder in a couple of years.
I hope Dubas is ready to install a couple of saunas and stock up on the salmiakki after Dubas added more Finns. In the 50 years before Dubas we drafted a total of 7 players from Finland, in year 2 of the Kyle Dubas experiment he's already drafted 6 Finns. We better rename the Ricoh and turn it into the Nokia because the Marlies are about to be looking a lot more like the Finnish World Junior team and i'm totally okay with that.
The icing on the cake came when Free Agency opened and Dubas really got to work, after getting bullied by Columbus we needed some grit and why not bring one of the grittiest guys scarborough has ever produced, Wayne Simmonds. Yes he's 32, yes he looked like shit in New Jersey but he seems pumped to be home in Toronto, it's a one year deal and he can immediately fill the spot that Kapanen was in.
As we all know the defence was horrible in that Columbus series and has been a problem for a while now, so the Leafs went out and picked up TJ Brodie from Calgary. Dubas was trying to get Brodie in a deal that involved Kadri going to Calgary, that didn't happen until now and he should play a big part in this new look Leafs defence.
We weren't done there with upgrades to the defence with a HUGE move to pick up new stanley cup champion Zach Bogosian. I was fired up when I saw this came trade come across the wire as I should be, Bogo is an absolute animal and is going to be a massive help on the blue line so maybe Morgan Rielly can take a breath every now and then.
Outside of those big deals we also went out and added Travis Boyd from the Caps, Jimmy Vesey (who i'm legit excited for) from Buffalo, and trading Andreas Johnsson to the Devils for Joey Anderson. All this new blood will hopefully be a needed influx into the line up, i'm sure there will be some more trades and we'll get there when we get there. But for now let's take thanksgiving to be thankful for the man himself trying to bring Toronto something we've wanted since the 60's Kyle Dubas.
Go Leafs Go.
