Well that sucked... - Toronto Maple Leafs v Columbus Blue Jackets Game 5 Recap

TORONTO, ONTARIO - AUGUST 09: Boone Jenner #38 and Nick Foligno #71 of the Columbus Blue Jackets celebrate after teammate Zach Werenski #8 scored on goaltender Frederik Andersen #31 of the Toronto Maple Leafs during the first period of Game Five of the Eastern Conference Qualification Round at Scotiabank Arena on August 09, 2020 in Toronto, Ontario. When we were 3-0 down in Game 4, everyone was saying "Watch the leafs comeback and win this just so we can lose on Sunday", well that's what happened we all got what was coming to us. A crushing 3-0 loss to a Columbus Blue Jackets team that was clearly better than us was the perfect follow up to a 3 goal comeback and an Auston Matthews OT winner fight in Foligno's stupid face. We were barely outshot in the first and were able to turn up the pressure on Korpisalo but most of those shots were the cupcakes we were serving up to both Joonas and Elvis all series. About those fucking cupcakes and no not the delicious confectionary treats, the shots we took for 95% of the series were either right at the goalies chest or a direct shot right into his glove; we make these amazing plays into their defensive zone and would just offer up a floater that isn't going into the back of the net. On a lighter note Freddie Andersen was yet again our saving grace (The Foudy goal in game 5 isn't the best look) but he was lights out and was able to be there when the defense would ultimately collapse in front of him. Dear Sheldon Keefe, the dump and chase doesn't fucking work bud, after it failed miserably in Game 1, 2, 3, and 4 we decided ''y'know let's give it another shot". Every time we would dump it down into Columbus's zone either Seth Jones or Zach Werenski would pound the leafs heads into the ice, while we're on that subject it's bullshit that no one went to back up Johnny T when he got crossed checked in the back by Werenski that was somehow only a 2 minute penalty. Down 2-0 we went into panic mode and put 6 skaters on the ice just like in Game 4, it shouldn't take us being down to finally decide to show some effort but apparently that's what it takes. Foligno's empty net to bring the final score to 3-0 was icing on the cake after the tears he shed when Matthews buried the OT winner in Game 4. After an embarrassing loss where do we go now? should Johansson been given more time before he came back? Should Rasmus Sandin have been given more ice time over the clown show that is Cody Ceci? All we know now is that we're heading out of the bubble and into an uncertain offseason with the 33.5 million dollar first line with the looming expansion draft and the shambolic defense whose only bright star was Morgan Rielly of course. At least we'll have the Buffalo Blue Jays and the Raptors to hopefully take our minds off of the trainwreck that was the 2020 Stanley Cup play-in/play off.
